Volunteer Opportunities
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
If you are interested in volunteering, please read the opportunity descriptions below and follow the instructions to sign up. If you would like to Chaperone a rehearsal, please email nutcracker@balletwest.org with subject line CHAPERONE followed by the date you would like to chaperone i.e. "CHAPERONE 09/21"
Chaperones
Chaperones are adults, both male and female, whose job is to ensure a non-stressful environment for the dancers before and during Nutcracker Children Activities (e.g. rehearsals, costume fittings, photo shoots, and performance). Chaperones are not babysitters. Please pick up your children promptly at the scheduled Pick-Up time. Chaperones are volunteers assigned to keep children safe, happy and secure. A Chaperone’s responsibility is NOT to discipline. Only Ballet West staff are allowed to discipline dancers associated with the cast. If there is a discipline problem, Chaperones are to report it to the Ballet West staff who will manage the situation. Chaperones will be following directions issued by Ballet West. Please respect them. If you have a problem with a Chaperone please discuss that with the Student Rehearsal Director. Ballet West encourages you to volunteer. It is a great opportunity to see your dancer and the Ballet West company dancers in a different light!
STUDIO AND STAGE REHEARSAL CHAPERONE DUTIES:
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to rehearsal, and wait with student cast members at the entrance door.
- Escort the student cast members to the studio for rehearsal.
- During rehearsal you wait either in the studio or near the studio, and may need to assist with any emergency that arises.
- After rehearsal, escort the student cast members to be picked up by their parent or driver and wait until the last dancer in your group has left. You should only have to wait 10 minutes. If you have to wait longer than 10 minutes, please email nutcracker@balletwest.org and also go up to the 2nd floor to speak with an admin who can call the dancers parent.

DRESS REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE CHAPERONE DUTIES:
- We will require one head chaperone, one chaperone for each role of Party Boys, Party Girls, Soldier, Buffoons and Act II.
- Sit with children in respective dressing areas and maintain quiet order during rehearsals and performances.
- Remind Dancers to properly care for the costumes.
- Accompany Dancers to the stage and keep them quiet.
- Care for ill or injured Dancers until a Student Ballet Master is available.
- Follow the instructions given by the Student Rehearsal Director.
BOUTIQUE VOLUNTEERS:
The Ballet West Boutique is located in the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre lobby. It is open prior to the performance, during intermission, and after the performances of The Nutcracker, and sells Ballet West apparel, gift items, and holiday décor. Boutique Volunteers act as cashiers and provide merchandising support for approximately 4 hours during each performance. Approximately eleven volunteers which includes a Lead Boutique Volunteer that are needed for each performance of The Nutcracker. Each volunteer is given a ticket to watch the show while they are working.
The Lead Boutique Volunteer must be willing to attend all or most performances of a cast and be able to help organize and train other volunteers and trouble shoot any problems with the help of Lisa Jensen. If you feel like this is something you would want to do, feel free to sign up in the lead volunteer spot on Sign Up Genius.
BUS DUTY VOLUNTEERS:
Volunteers are needed to help with organizing the buses during the Education Performances. Approximately 2-4 volunteers are needed for each performance for 3-4 hours depending on the show. More information will be available at a later date and will be posted on the Parent Main Page.
ACADEMY TABLE VOLUNTEERS:
Volunteers are needed to be advocates for the Ballet West Academy. We will need 3 volunteers per show to sit at a table in the lobby to answer questions and pass out fliers to those interested in the Academy. At the end of the Nutcracker performance in order to raise funds for Ballet West's Children's Enchantment Fund 2 of the volunteers are asked to mingle among our patrons in the lobby with a container for approximately 15-20 minutes collecting patrons tickets that will be turned in to collect donations.
Volunteers will be given tickets to watch the show.
VOLUNTEER SIGNUPS FOR DRESS REHEARSALS, PERFORMANCES, BOUTIQUE AND ACADEMY TABLE ARE DONE THROUGH SIGN UP GENIUS BY CLICKING THE LINKS BELOW. PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP FOR 2 VOLUNTEER SHIFTS PER CAST PER ROLE, 2 SHIFTS FOR BOUTIQUE AND 2 SHIFTS FOR ACADEMY TABLE. THIS ALLOWS ALL PARENTS TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO VOLUNTEER. AS WE GET CLOSER AND SPOTS HAVE NOT BEEN FILLED WE WILL EMAIL EVERYONE AND LET THEM KNOW THAT WE NEED ADDITIONAL SIGNUPS.
