As Corps Artist Jazz Khai Bynum created her piece being performed by the Utah Valley University's Repertory Ballet Ensemble, she turned to music that resonated with her own identity. "Let me just go somewhere that feels like home," she explains. "So I went to Duke Ellington." See Jazz’s piece, With Feeling, at Works from Within, opening next wednesday.
Each year, I CAN DO reaches over 1,000 students across multiple school districts, with their culminating performance this week on May 6 and 7, showcasing all participants across two evenings. This local initiative supporting Salt Lake City schools fosters a sense of belonging, addresses dropout prevention, and promotes student well-being for those who might otherwise never experience dance education. "Ninety percent of these students probably wouldn't jump into a dance class. We help them achieve success by doing something completely foreign and help them think about what other things they can do too, said Director of Education and Community Outreach Peter Christie.
Principal Artists Katlyn Addison and Hadriel Diniz stun audiences and the Fjord review alike! “Ballet West’s artists are not carbon copies of one another—they’re distinct parts of a larger whole, each one grabbing the eye like flecks of sunlight hitting a diamond."
