Ballet West Academy’s James Payne named Director at School of Ballet Arizona

Ballet West announces that James Payne, currently Principal Faculty and Trainee Coordinator at Ballet West Academy, will be departing to assume the role of Director at the School of Ballet Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona. Payne will conclude his tenure with Ballet West on May 24, 2025, following the academy's final performances of the year, and will begin his new position on May 27, 2025.
A respected figure in ballet education, Payne has the Professional Trainee Division with Ballet West Academy for three years, bringing his extensive experience as a former professional dancer and educator to elevate the program. His connection to Ballet West spans decades, having performed with the company from 1989-1994 before joining Houston Ballet, and later returning to teach at Ballet West's Summer Intensive programs for many years.
"Ballet West is where I began my journey in the professional world, I will always call this home," said Payne. "Working with the high level of students and collaborating with both the Academy and Artistic teams has been a truly rewarding experience."
Payne’s philosophy while overseeing the Trainee program has continued the tradition of excellence at Ballet West Academy, which extends beyond technical instruction to instill diligence, confidence, accountability, and honesty—qualities essential to students' overall health and success.
The move represents a homecoming for Payne, who began his training in Phoenix with Michel Fokine's great niece Nina Marlow. He brings over 35 years of professional experience in ballet to his new role, including an impressive performance career with Ballet West and Houston Ballet (1994-2001), where he performed soloist and principal roles in classical and contemporary works by renowned choreographers.
Following his performance career, Payne served as Houston Ballet's company manager and later co-founded and directed a student performing company and school for 17 years in The Woodlands, Texas. His extensive resume includes serving as Philadelphia Ballet's School Director, teaching on the Houston Ballet Academy faculty, and sitting on the board of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). He continues to serve as a Master Teacher and judge for Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) and as a repetiteur for Trey McIntyre, staging his ballets internationally.
