Bruce Caldwell

Rehearsal Director and Company Archivist

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Bruce began his ballet training at age 10 with Bene Arnold.  His first appearance onstage was in Willam F. Christensen’s The Nutcracker in 1961, as Drosselmeyer’s nephew.

After joining The Utah Civic Ballet (predecessor to Ballet West) in 1968, he moved through the ranks, and in 1971 became a Principal Dancer.  Over the next 20 years, he performed all of the major roles in the Ballet West repertoire, including Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Prince Florimund in The Sleeping Beauty, Sugar Plum Cavalier in The Nutcracker, Oberon in The Dream, as well as leading roles in over 15 Balanchine works. 

In 1991, he moved to the Artistic Staff of Ballet West, assuming duties of staging ballets, rehearsing, and teaching the company, continuing on to this day. He is also the Ballet West Archivist.

He has been awarded the Governors Excellence in the Arts Award, the Chamber of Commerce Artist of the Year Award, and most recently, the Ballet West Guild Arts Legend Award.
