Ballet West Announces Choreogrpahers for 2010 "Innovations" Program

SALT LAKE CITY – December 17, 2009 – Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute is pleased to announce the selection of five choreographers whose new works will be performed during Ballet West’s ground-breaking “Innovations” program in May 2010.
Principal Artist Michael Bearden, Artist Aidan DeYoung and Artist Megan Furse will premiere their works alongside two prominent choreographers from outside Ballet West.
“Every year, I invite our company dancers to apply for our Innovations program and every year I am impressed by their creativity and vision,” said Sklute. “Each of the three dancers chosen this year had something of their own to say choreographically.”
The program also features a new work by internationally recognized choreographer Helen Pickett, whose ballets have also recently been presented by Boston Ballet and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, among others.
“I am thrilled to present a work by Helen Pickett,” said Sklute. “She is an American choreographer who made her name dancing with William Forsythe’s Frankfurt Ballet and she is developing both national and international acclaim for her dynamic and athletic style. Helen’s work takes classical ballet into the future, and her new creation for Ballet West is at once edgy and romantic.”
In addition, Sklute is excited and proud to commission Charlotte Boye Christensen, artistic director of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, to create a new work on Ballet West.
“Since I’ve arrived in Utah I have wanted Ballet West to collaborate with the wealth of great local artists we have here," said Sklute. “It will be fascinating to see how Charlotte’s unique and powerful approach to dance blends with our classical dancers.”
From its inception in 2007, Ballet West’s “Innovations” has enjoyed an ever-increasing public following. This year, the program will have its longest run yet, with eight performances from May 21-29, 2010 in the intimate setting of the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 West Broadway.
“At its heart, this is what Innovations is all about to me – building the future of ballet and dance here in Utah through commissions by national, international, local and company artists.”
Tickets to “Innovations” may be purchased now as part of a Platinum or Silver season package by calling Ballet West at (801) 869-6920. Single tickets to “Innovations” will be available beginning April 19, 2010.
